Golden opportunities on the Marbella Golden Mile

A good time to buy in a time-tested area

For many years now, one of the most celebrated leisure living areas in Spain’s sunny southern coastal region Andalusia, Spain, has been the so-called “Golden Mile” in Marbella, which stretches from the Marbella Club Hotel to Puerto Banús. Developers here have traditionally focused on proximity to golf courses and luxury amenities, such as the pleasure harbour of Puerto Banús and the town of Marbella.

One justification for the area’s popularity is the sheer variety it offers in terms of properties, many of which are now changing hands with the buyer in a clearly improved position compared to even just a year ago, not to mention three or four. There is everything here from apartment complexes in gated communities with 24-hour security to villas on “front-line” golf or beach plots curiously offering a great deal of peace and quiet for such a popular area.

Another is Marbella lifestyle. On the one hand, this is no doubt one of the most cosmopolitan areas on the globe. Here the English, German, Scandinavian, Dutch, French, Italians, Americans, Russians, and Eastern Europeans, to name just a few nationalities, live in harmony with the local Spanish.  On the other, although the area certainly is exclusive, activities are not limited to socialising, golf, sports, shopping, dining, golf, and soaking up the rays by the pool or on a beach. There are great excursions in the nearby Ronda mountains or further afield in any of the bewilderingly varied national parks found in Andalusia, which is of course also alive with music, culture, and a rich history that have inspired so many romantic writers including Prosper Merimée, Washington Irving, and Ernest Hemingway.

If you are looking for a home or buying to invest, a deciding factor will always be property’s surroundings. The Golden Mile is divided by the N340 road, on both sides of which hotels, golf courses, shops, and restaurants abound. Beach-side residences to the south of the road are now long-established, while there are both new developments on promotion and older properties changing hands on the foothills to the north.  The Golden Mile’s residential living areas are listed in the menu to the left; and you can click on each area for an individual description.
